Through biological flume experiments, we studied the effect of shear velocity and attachment period on the percent detachment of Pecten maximus post-larvae of different sizes reared on two experimental diets. The first diet, (Pavlova lutheri, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans), which served as a reference diet (PTC), is commonly used in bivalve hatcheries; the second is the PTC diet with the addition of Rhodomonas salina (PTCR). Our results indicate that the detachment of post-larvae fed PTCR diet showed significant interactions between scallop length, attachment period and shear stress, while the post-larvae feed with the PTC diet showed only effect of shear stress factor. Oyster farming structures are artificial obstacles which disturb tidal flow and wave propagation. These effects can induce modifications of erosion and sedimentation patterns, turbidity changes, local silting up and can be threatening for the shellfish farming itself. The understanding of the impact of these structures in terms of hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the far-field, i.e. at the scale of a bay, is a very challenging task. Soft-shell clam, Mya arenaria, culture on the east coast of Canada is characterized by high loss following seeding. To evaluate the importance of passive transport due to currents, an experimental flume study was designed. The purpose was to measure the effects of hydrodynamic conditions, substrate, and clam size on dispersal in controlled laboratory condition and to interpret these results in relation to field measurements. Laboratory experiments performed in a recirculating flume were designed to quantify the bioturbation influence of the mud snail Hydrobia ulvae, one of the most abundant deposit feeders on European intertidal mudflats. Variations in sediment moisture content that occur between bedforms in shore-normal, ridge and runnel systems of intertidal mudflats were added to the model definition. Sediment erosion thresholds, erosion rates and the microalgal pigment composition of resuspended material were quantified for different H. ulvae densities (0, 1000, 5000, 10 000 and 50 000 snails m(-2)) and applied bed shear stresses.
